Adventures with Italian Trains

I ventured out and about with a few classmates one weekend to find some of the sites we'd only read about before.  We took the train south and set out to explore the ruins of Pompei.  (Mount Vesuvius is in the background on the postcard above).  As interesting as that was, I also enjoyed the ruins of Paestum--maybe even more so!  There wasn't the crush of people at Paestum, and there was a much more relaxed feel.  I remember feeling as if I was walking through a field discovering the ancient houses, stairs, and temples rather than the outdoor museum feel I experienced in Pompei.

After we had taken in the sights, we headed back into Naples to catch a train back home.  I had to buy a ticket (my classmates already had theirs), and in that brief amount of time, I had missed the train!  I waited a few hours for the next one, which turned out to be a slow one, and not the speedy one I had wanted to take.  And so I arrived home in Florence well after midnight, escorted to my neighborhood by one of the hottest Italian military men around.  I'd say I made it alright!  Well, I think it could have turned out better if I'd gotten a phone number and a date out the experience as well...  ;)
