Is Writing Outdated?

Last month my mother entered the 21st century and sent me her first text!  She recently bought an iPad, and she's still trying to master the world of computers--that one will take a little while...  Electronics make it easy to record ideas and to communicate with others quickly.  And I admit, when it comes to business responses, or getting my checking account questions answered, I want fast.  I want the facts, and I want them now!

It's funny to look back and remember how much I hated writing as a child.  It was too slow, my handwriting too messy, and couldn't you just speak your ideas instead?  Occasionally I could be interested in writing, and I recently came across a story I wrote about a family of buttons when I was probably 10 (and probably bored on summer break!).

Writing by hand can be slow, but now I savor that and turn it into a positive.  As I write my friend or journal, I have time to think, to be intentional.  As I set the tip of my pen to paper I have the opportunity to create something of meaning (Sometimes.  Sometimes the content isn't great, but I enjoy the process!).

So get out there and write something today.  Write a card, a letter, a grocery list.  Keep a record of what happened at breakfast and why you were ready to strangle that child!  Journal what is running through your mind, and what is curled up in your heart.  It's okay--your third grade teacher won't lean over your shoulder and critique you!
